Photosyntheseprozesse, also known as photosynthesis, are biological processes by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy in the form of glucose, or sugar. This process is crucial for the production of oxygen and the sustenance of life on Earth. The term "photosynthese" is derived from the Greek words "photos," meaning light, and "synthesis," meaning putting together.

The process of photosynthesis occurs in two main stages: the light-dependent reactions and the light-independent reactions, also known as the Calvin cycle. In the light-dependent reactions, which take place in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts, light energy is absorbed by pigments such as chlorophyll. This energy is used to split water molecules, releasing oxygen as a byproduct and producing ATP and NADPH, which are energy-rich molecules.

In the light-independent reactions, the ATP and NADPH produced in the light-dependent reactions are used to fix carbon dioxide into organic molecules, such as glucose. This stage occurs in the stroma of the chloroplasts and does not require light.

Photosynthesis is essential for the survival of most life forms on Earth. It provides the primary source of energy for plants, which are then consumed by herbivores, and ultimately by carnivores. Additionally, photosynthesis is responsible for the production of oxygen, which is vital for the respiration of aerobic organisms. The process also plays a significant role in the carbon cycle, as it removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in organic compounds.
