PCB design is the process of planning and creating the layout of a printed circuit board to electrically connect and mechanically support electronic components. It converts a circuit schematic into a physical artifact that can be fabricated, tested, and assembled.

The design workflow typically begins with schematic capture to define components and interconnections, followed by generating a netlist. Each component footprint is assigned and validated for correct electrical and mechanical fit. The board layout stage places components and routes conductive traces, with attention to signal integrity, power delivery, thermal management, and manufacturability. Design rule checks and electrical rule checks verify clearances, trace widths, via sizes, and other constraints. The process also accounts for solder mask, silkscreen, and fiducials, all of which aid assembly and testing.

Outputs from PCB design include fabrication files such as Gerber files and drill drawings, a bill of materials, assembly drawings, and pick-and-place data. These files are used by fabricators and assemblers to manufacture and populate the board. Throughout development, designers consider manufacturability, testing strategies, tolerance stackups, and potential errors that could affect yield.

Boards vary from simple single-layer to complex multi-layer and high-density interconnect (HDI) types, employing materials like FR-4 or polyimide and copper weights that influence impedance and thermal performance. Design tools—such as KiCad, Eagle, Altium Designer, OrCAD, and PADS—assist in schematic capture, footprint libraries, and routing. Adherence to standards (e.g., IPC-2221 for design practices, IPC-6012 for PCB acceptance) and collaboration with manufacturers underpin a robust, repeatable design process.
