Organiczne

Organiczne is a Polish adjective meaning related to or derived from living matter, or pertaining to carbon-containing compounds in chemistry. The term is used in everyday language as well as in scientific contexts and can refer to several related notions: chemistry, biology and ecology, and agriculture or food labeling.

In chemistry, organic compounds are carbon-based substances, often composed of carbon and hydrogen and frequently containing other elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur or halogens. The field that studies these compounds is organic chemistry. This branch contrasts with inorganic chemistry, which deals with substances not based on carbon-hydrogen frameworks. The distinction originated in the 19th century, when chemists began systematizing substances derived from living organisms versus minerals.

In biology and ecology, organic matter (materia organiczna) consists of materials produced by living organisms, such as plant residues and microbial biomass. In agriculture and food, organic or organiczna produkty denote goods produced under organic farming standards. In the European Union and Poland, organic farming is regulated, emphasizing restricted synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, sustainable practices, and certification schemes to verify compliance. Organic labeling helps consumers identify products produced according to these standards.

Etymology shares roots with the Latin organicus and the German organisch, reflecting the historical development of organic chemistry and its contrast with inorganic chemistry. Today, organics spans science and everyday life, describing substances and practices tied to living systems or carbon-based chemistry.
