North Macedonia, officially known as the Republic of North Macedonia, is a landlocked country situated in southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. It shares borders with Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. The country's capital and largest city is Skopje.

North Macedonia has a diverse geography characterized by mountains, valleys, and rivers. The Vardar River runs through the central part of the country, shaping its landscape and agriculture. The terrain includes the Šar Mountain range to the northwest and the Baba Mountain range near the border with Kosovo and Serbia.

The nation has a rich history dating back to ancient times, with influences from Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. It was part of Yugoslavia until gaining independence in 1991 following the breakup of the federation. Initially recognized internationally as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), the country officially changed its name to North Macedonia in 2019, resolving a long-standing dispute with Greece.

North Macedonia's population is ethnically diverse, primarily comprised of Macedonians, along with Albanians, Turks, Romani, Serbs, and other minority groups. The official language is Macedonian, with Albanian also recognized as an official language at the national level, especially in Albanian-majority areas.

The economy is largely based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The country is a candidate for European Union membership and is also a member of NATO since 2020. Despite challenges related to political and economic development, North Macedonia continues to pursue integration into European and international institutions.

The country is known for its cultural heritage, including historic sites, Orthodox Christian churches, and Ottoman-era architecture, as well as natural attractions like Lake Ohrid and the national parks.
