Nonkonvensional

Nonkonvensional is an adjective used in Indonesian and Malay to describe methods, technologies, or approaches that do not conform to established norms or standard practices. It contrasts with konvensional, or conventional, and is used across fields such as military, medicine, and energy.

In a military context, nonkonvensional warfare describes strategies and tactics that rely on irregular forces, guerrilla operations, or asymmetric methods rather than traditional state-on-state warfare.

In medicine, nonkonvensional refers to methods outside mainstream Western medicine, often called alternative or complementary medicine. Its effectiveness and safety vary; some practices are evidence-based, others lack robust evidence, and regulatory status differs by country.

In energy and resources, nonkonvensional resources refer to hydrocarbons or resources not easily extracted by conventional means, such as shale gas, tight oil, or coalbed methane, requiring different technologies.

Other uses in business or problem-solving contexts may refer to nonkonvensional approaches that challenge standard assumptions. The term's meaning depends on context and can be neutral or pejorative depending on usage.
