Mops

A mop is a cleaning tool that consists of a bundle of absorbent fibers attached to a longer handle, designed for cleaning floors and other surfaces. The cloth or synthetic fibers absorb liquid and can be wrung out to control water. Mops are used with cleaners and water, and come in wet and dry forms.

Common types include: string or rag mops, which have loose fibers tied around a handle; sponge mops, which use a sponge head; flat mops, which have a rectangular head with replaceable microfiber or cotton cloth; microfiber mops, which use highly absorbent fibers; and steam mops, which clean with heat. Dry mops or dust mops use a cloth head or disposable pads to lift dust.

Materials: cotton, microfiber, and cellulose are typical. Microfiber is valued for absorbency and dirt-trapping ability. Replacement heads or pads are used across most designs.

Usage and maintenance: use with appropriate cleaning solutions, wring to remove excess liquid, and rinse after use. Wet mops should be allowed to dry completely between uses to prevent mold. Clean and dry buckets, wringers, and mop heads as needed. Replace worn components to maintain cleaning effectiveness. Store in a ventilated area.

In German, the word Mops refers to the pug, a small dog; this is unrelated to the cleaning tool aside from shared spelling.
