Monsunzeit

Monsunzeit, or monsoon season, is the period during which monsoon systems produce sustained, heavy rainfall due to the seasonal reversal of prevailing winds. The term is used in meteorology and German-language discourse to describe the major rainy seasons of subtropical and tropical regions, notably South Asia, parts of Africa, East Asia, and the Americas.

The phenomenon results from differential heating between land and sea. In warmer months, the continental interior heats up rapidly, creating a broad low-pressure area that pulls in moist air from adjacent oceans. As this air rises and cools, it releases large amounts of rain across the monsoon region. In winter, the circulation weakens and reverses, leading to a dry season in many areas.

Regional patterns vary: in the Indian subcontinent, the Southwest Monsoon typically brings most rainfall from June to September; East Asia experiences a humid season in late spring through summer; the West African monsoon extends roughly from May to October; and the North American monsoon system affects the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico in summer and early autumn. Local timing can deviate by weeks or months.

Impacts include substantial agricultural benefits and water resource replenishment, but also flood risks, landslides, and economic disruption when the onset is delayed or rainfall is excessively intense. Climate variability and change influence the strength, duration, and geographic extent of Monsunzeit, with implications for adaptation, planning, and disaster risk management.
