Matmaking

Matmaking is the craft and industry of producing mats, thin or thick flexible coverings used for flooring, protection, cushioning, decor, or sport. The field encompasses both traditional handwork and modern machine production, with processes that range from weaving and braiding to tufting, nonwoven fabrication, and coating or backing application. Material choice depends on intended use, durability, and environment.

Common materials include natural fibers such as coir (coconut husk), jute, sisal, cotton, wool, and rushes, as well as grasses and reeds. Synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, polyester, and nylon are widely used for resistance to moisture and wear. Some mats incorporate rubber or PVC backings for grip, moisture barriers, or added durability. Finishing steps may involve dyeing or printing, edge binding, latex or rubber coatings, and anti-slip or antimicrobial treatments.

Types and applications vary widely. Door mats and entrance mats are designed to scrape dirt and dampness from shoes, while bath and kitchen mats focus on comfort and moisture management. Yoga and exercise mats provide cushioning and a stable surface for fitness activities. Anti-fatigue mats improve comfort in workplaces with standing tasks. Tatami mats, a traditional form in Japan, use a core of straw or foam with a woven covering and have cultural and architectural significance.

Historically, matmaking reflects regional resources and techniques, from handwoven textiles to industrialized flooring products. Today, sustainability considerations influence material choices and manufacturing, with growing emphasis on recycled content, recyclable backings, and low-emission finishes, alongside requirements for slip resistance and durability in various markets.
