Lycraspandex

Lycraspandex is a term used to describe elastane fibers marketed under the Lycra brand and more generally referred to as spandex. It is a highly elastic synthetic fiber capable of extensive stretch and rapid recovery, making it a common component in textiles that require a close fit and freedom of movement.

The fiber is a segmented polyurethane polymer produced by solution spinning. Its structure includes hard and soft segments that give both elasticity and strength. In practice, lycraspandex is typically produced as filaments or ribbons and is often drawn and blended with other fibers to balance comfort, breathability, and durability.

Key properties include high stretchability (often able to extend several times its original length) and excellent recovery, enabling garments to return to their original shape after elongation. It offers good resistance to body oils and sweat and contributes to a soft, cling-free fit. However, lycraspandex has limitations: it can be sensitive to chlorine, certain lotions and oils, and high heat, and it may have relatively lower abrasion resistance when used alone. It is often blended with cotton, polyester, nylon, or other fibers to improve wear characteristics and comfort.

Common applications span activewear, swimwear, hosiery, shapewear, and medical compression garments, where a snug fit and freedom of movement are important. Care instructions typically advise avoiding high heat and prolonged exposure to chlorine; regular washing and air drying help preserve elasticity. The term lycraspandex highlights the elastomeric properties central to spandex fibers and their use in performance textiles.
