Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, or the Leibniz Association, is a German research organization that unites independent scientific institutes and service facilities under a common umbrella. It aims to conduct both fundamental and applied research that addresses societal challenges and to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to policy, industry, and the public.

The association comprises a large network of institutes across Germany, covering natural sciences, life sciences, engineering, environmental research, and the humanities and social sciences. While the institutes operate with legal independence, they collaborate within the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft to pursue interdisciplinary projects and shared strategic goals.

Funding and governance: The Leibniz Association is funded jointly by the federal government and the German states, with additional support from the institutes’ own resources. It is governed by a President, a management board, and a Senate, with a General Assembly representing the member institutes.

Research and programs: The Leibniz-Gemeinschaft emphasizes problem-oriented and application-related research, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge transfer. It supports cross-institutional programs, thematic research, and centers tackling issues such as health, sustainability, environment, mobility, digitalization, culture, and education.

Prize and policy: The association awards the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, one of Germany’s most prestigious science awards, and it promotes science communication and technology transfer alongside policy-relevant research activities.

History and role: The Leibniz Association was established in 1990 and is named after the 17th-century philosopher and scientist Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. It plays a central role in Germany’s research landscape by coordinating institutes that address societal needs and link science with practical applications. It also engages in international collaboration and participation in EU research programs.
