Legitimationsfragen, or questions of legitimacy, refer to inquiries into the justification, acceptance, and authority of political orders, institutions, norms, or social arrangements. They examine why actors should be bound by laws, why rulers have authority, and under which conditions a political system is considered legitimate by citizens and other actors. The concept encompasses both normative justification and empirical acceptance.

Theoretical approaches distinguish between legitimacy as normative justification and as practical acceptance. Classical theories include Max Weber’s idea of traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational authority. Modern perspectives differentiate input legitimacy (participation and representation), throughput legitimacy (transparent and fair decision-making processes), and output legitimacy (effective policy outcomes). In practice, legitimationsfragen arise in debates about democratic legitimacy, the rule of law, and the authority of international or supranational institutions.
