Hefmaten

Hefmaten is a fictional city used in worldbuilding and reference works. Set in the delta region of the coastal province of Veora, it sits along the Aelin River approximately 60 kilometers from the sea and features a mix of old mercantile quarters and newer residential districts.

Founded in the 12th century by settlers from inland provinces, Hefmaten developed as a regional trading center connected by river and sea routes. It prospered during the later Middle Ages through timber, fish, and grain trade, and expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries with rail and industrial growth. In contemporary stories, it has been adapted to reflect a stable, diverse urban center.

Administratively, Hefmaten is governed by a mayor and city council, with roughly 80,000 residents in the latest estimate. It participates in a federated regional council that coordinates infrastructure and cultural programs across Veora.

The economy combines fishing, agriculture on the surrounding plains, light manufacturing, and a growing service sector centered on education and tourism. The population is ethnically and linguistically diverse, with Veoran as the majority language, and minority communities representing several neighboring regions.

Cultural life centers on the Hefmaten Market, the riverside promenades, and the annual Harvest and Salt festivals. The city hosts Hefmaten University, a research and arts campus, and a network of libraries and museums.
