Haftbefehl
Haftbefehl is the German term for an arrest warrant. It is a judicial decision issued by a judge that authorizes police to arrest a person and bring them before a court. A warrant is typically issued when there is substantial suspicion of a crime and a risk that the person may flee, hide, tamper with evidence, or pose a danger to investigations or the public. In Germany, warrants are issued under the Strafprozessordnung (Code of Criminal Procedure). The warrant can authorize pre-trial detention (Untersuchungshaft) or the securing of a person already in custody. Upon arrest, the person is brought before a judge promptly, and the suspect retains certain rights, including legal counsel and information on the reasons for detention. A warrant can be suspended or replaced by other measures, such as bail, as appropriate to the case. Warrants are generally valid nationwide but may be recognized across borders in cooperation with extradition mechanisms; international warrants follow applicable treaties.
