Grammatiek

Grammatiek is the study of the rules and patterns that govern the structure of a language. In linguistic terms, it refers to the systematic description of how words combine to form phrases and sentences, and how grammatical meaning is conveyed. The term is often used to distinguish descriptive analysis of language from prescriptive rules that dictate “correct” usage.

Typically, grammatiek focuses on morphology—the formation and inflection of words—and syntax, the arrangement of words into phrases and sentences. Some descriptions also touch on phonology and orthography, while others treat these areas as separate domains. The core aim is to describe how language is actually used, rather than prescribe a single standard of correctness.

Grammatical analysis also supports cross-linguistic comparison and typology by documenting how different languages treat morphology, syntax, and sentence structure.
