Fahrzeugbau, or vehicle construction, refers to the engineering and production of vehicles and their propulsion systems. The field covers road vehicles such as cars, trucks, and buses, as well as rail vehicles like locomotives and rolling stock, and other transport-related units used in logistics and public transit. It encompasses concept design, engineering, manufacturing, integration of subsystems, and ongoing maintenance and servicing.

Historically, Fahrzeugbau developed alongside the expansion of rail and road transport in the 19th and 20th centuries, with automotive pioneers and locomotive builders shaping its trajectory. Modern Fahrzeugbau involves original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), specialized body and chassis builders, and an extensive network of suppliers delivering components, electronics, software, and integrated systems. Production is organized around platforms, modular architectures, just-in-time logistics, and global supply chains, with rigorous quality and safety standards.

Key technologies include electrified powertrains, hybrid systems, fuel cells, lightweight materials, advanced driver-assistance systems, and autonomous driving. Digitalization, simulation, robotics, and additive manufacturing are increasingly used in development and production. The industry operates under regulatory frameworks that address safety, emissions, cybersecurity, and interoperability, and adheres to international standards from bodies such as UNECE and ISO.

Economically, Fahrzeugbau is a major industrial sector in many countries, contributing to exports, employment, and innovation. It faces ongoing challenges from environmental policy, energy prices, supply chain disruptions, and the transition to sustainable mobility, while benefiting from growing demand for efficient, connected, and low-emission vehicles.
