DSME

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is a South Korean shipbuilding and marine engineering company. Founded in 1973 as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the firm is based in Geoje, South Korea, and operates a large shipyard that has constructed ships for international customers. DSME designs and builds a wide range of vessels and offshore structures, including container ships, bulk carriers, LNG carriers, tankers, and oil and gas platforms, as well as naval vessels and related marine equipment.

DSME originated within the Daewoo Group, grew rapidly during the late 20th century, and was affected by the group’s dissolution in 1999-2000. The company subsequently underwent creditor-led restructuring and governance changes, continuing to operate and compete with South Korea’s other large shipyards, notably Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries.

In addition to construction, DSME provides offshore engineering, modular fabrication, ship repair, retrofitting, and conversion services. It employs advanced manufacturing technologies, including automated welding, heavy plate cutting, and modular construction techniques.

DSME serves a global customer base, including major shipping lines and energy companies. The company has faced cyclical swings common to the shipbuilding industry and has undergone restructuring and productivity improvement efforts in response to market downturns. It remains a key contributor to South Korea’s shipbuilding sector and to the global supply chain for merchant ships and offshore infrastructure.
