CANARIE

CANARIE is a Canadian not-for-profit corporation that operates the country's national research and education network (NREN). It provides high-speed connectivity and related services to Canada’s post-secondary institutions, research organizations, hospitals, and government agencies, enabling collaboration across disciplines and regions.

The CANARIE network links universities, colleges, and research centers with regional and international partners, forming the backbone for data-intensive science, digital humanities, and education technologies. Core services include high-performance network connectivity, identity and access management, data transfer, cloud and storage services, and security tools. The organization also supports data management, software platforms, and collaborative research workflows.

Governance and funding: CANARIE is governed by a board of directors representing sector stakeholders and is funded through a mix of government support, member contributions, and project-based funding. It works in partnership with federal and provincial governments, universities, colleges, hospitals, and industry, and coordinates with international research networks to facilitate cross-border collaboration.

History and role: Established in the 1990s as part of Canada’s investment in national research networking, CANARIE has evolved to operate and steward Canada's NREN ecosystem, fostering open science and innovation through digital infrastructure and services.
