Basisconjugatie is the term used to refer to the regular or canonical set of verb inflections that forms the foundation of a language’s conjugation system. It describes the predictable pattern of changes a verb stem undergoes to indicate grammatical categories such as person, number, tense, mood, and voice. The concept helps distinguish the regular, model paradigm from irregular or suppletive forms that deviate from the pattern.

In most descriptions, basisconjugatie includes finite forms found in different tenses and moods, along with nonfinite forms like the infinitive, participles, and gerunds. Many languages express these categories through affixes attached to a stem, though some rely on stem changes (ablaut) or internal modifications as part of the regular pattern. The regular paradigm serves as a benchmark against which irregular verbs are identified and learned.

Examples help illustrate the idea. In English, the regular verb walk follows a basic conjugation: I walk, you walk, he walks, we walk, you walk, they walk in the present; walked in the past; walking as present participle; walked as past participle. In languages with richer systems, such as Spanish or French, the basisconjugatie would cover the standard endings and forms for each mood and tense, with irregular forms treated separately.
