Barnsand

Barnsand is a small village and civil parish in the rural heartland of Northmere, a fictional county in the country of Lyria. It lies on the north bank of the River Alder, about 12 miles from the county town and near the boundary with the neighboring parish of Redmere.

The settlement traces to the 17th century, with early farms and a sandstone quarry that supplied local building work. The quarry was active through the 19th century, and its remains form a minor landmark around which the village grew. The local church and school-house served generations of residents from nearby farms.

The landscape is rolling farmland with scattered copses and hedgerows. The local economy centers on agriculture, dairy farming, and small crafts, with some diversification into countryside tourism around the quarry ruins and the adjacent nature reserve.

As of the latest census, Barnsand has roughly 320 residents. The parish council comprises five elected members and manages common land, traffic issues, and village events. It falls under the jurisdiction of Northmere District Council and is represented in the national framework by a single member of Parliament.

Key landmarks include St. Mary’s Church, dating from 1742, and Barnsand Quarry, now a safeguarded greenspace and wildlife site. The village green hosts annual events and markets. Transportation is limited to a local bus service; the nearest railway station is in Redmere, with additional services available in the county town.
