Associazioni

An associazione (plural associazioni) is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization formed by individuals sharing a common interest or goal. In civil society, associations organize people to pursue cultural, artistic, recreational, charitable, scientific, religious, professional, or neighborhood aims beyond individual action. Profits are not distributed to members; any surplus is reinvested to advance the association's purposes.

Formation and governance: An association is typically created by a statute or charter approved by founders. It is governed by a general assembly of members and a board of directors or equivalent officers, such as president, treasurer, and secretary. The rules for membership, decision-making, elections, and accountability are set out in the statute. In many jurisdictions, associations may obtain legal personality through registration, which affects property ownership, contract capacity, and eligibility for public funding; unregistered associations can still operate but have more limited rights.

Activities and funding: Associations carry out activities in line with their mission—organizing events, education, volunteering, cultural programs, sports, advocacy, or social services. They typically fund operations through membership dues, donations, grants, sponsorships, and sometimes subsidies from public authorities or private foundations. They must maintain records, report finances, and comply with applicable laws on fundraising, data protection, and anti-money-laundering compliance where relevant.

Impact and note: As components of civil society, associazioni foster citizen participation, social cohesion, and community development. They range from small local clubs to large national organizations and can collaborate with governments, businesses, and other nonprofits.
