Arbeidstilsynet

Arbeidstilsynet, officially the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority, is a government directorate in Norway responsible for supervising compliance with the Working Environment Act (Arbeidsmiljøloven) and related safety, health, and working conditions legislation. Its mandate is to promote safe and healthy workplaces across all sectors and to protect employees’ rights to a secure working environment.

The agency conducts inspections of workplaces, investigations of work-related accidents and occupational diseases, and takes enforcement actions when violations are found. It can issue orders to remedy unsafe conditions and, where appropriate, impose penalties. In addition to enforcement, Arbeidstilsynet provides guidance, information, and practical support to employers and employees, helping organizations implement risk assessments, safe procedures, and training programs. It operates an information service with guidance materials, checklists, and digital tools to facilitate compliance.

Arbeidstilsynet collaborates with employers’ and employees’ representatives, local authorities, and other government agencies. It also engages in public information campaigns and international cooperation to align Norwegian practices with broader European and global safety standards. The agency maintains statistics and publishes reports on work-related injuries, illnesses, and trends to inform policy and practice.

By combining inspections, guidance, and data-driven oversight, Arbeidstilsynet aims to reduce workplace accidents and health problems while supporting productive and compliant workplaces in Norway.
