Ankunftzonen

Ankunftzonen are designated spatial zones within transportation hubs, event venues, and logistics facilities that manage the flow of arriving people or goods. The term, formed from Ankunft (arrival) and Zonen (zones), is used in German-speaking planning literature to describe areas where inputs from outside the facility are received and prepared for onward movement.

In airports and railway stations, Ankunftzonen correspond to the parts of the building where arriving passengers reach the ground transportation network, proceed to baggage claim and immigration, or transfer to buses and taxis. In seaports and logistics centers, they denote receiving areas for shipments or cargo, where goods are checked, documented, and routed to warehouses or production lines. In event planning, an Ankunftzone may be a controlled space where attendees enter, register, or collect passes before proceeding to the main venue.

Key functions include crowd management, wayfinding, safety supervision, and integration with public transit feeds. Design considerations emphasize clear signage, accessibility for people with limited mobility, sufficient space for queues, separation of arriving and departing flows, surveillance, and contingency planning for peak volumes.

The term is sometimes used interchangeably with Arrivals area or Arrivals hall; in many contexts, official documentation prefers more specific designations such as Arrivals area, Receiving zone, or Intake zone, depending on the sector.
