Abzustimmen

Abzustimmen is a German verb formed from stimmen (to agree, to vote, to tune) with the prefix ab-. It has two primary uses: a political- procedural sense referring to decision-making by vote, and a sense related to coordinating or aligning something with another.

In political and organizational contexts, abstimmen means to decide an issue by a formal vote. It is typically used with a direct object and a preposition such as über or zu, as in über den Antrag abstimmen or über den Vorschlag abstimmen. The noun Abstimmung denotes the act or result of such a vote. Common constructions include Die Mitglieder stimmen über den Antrag ab and Die Abstimmung ergab eine Mehrheit. The verb forms include ich stimme ab, du stimmst ab, er hat abgestimmt; the infinitive is abstimmen, and in subordinate clauses it appears as abzustimmen (es ist geplant, über den Antrag abzustimmen).

A second, non-political sense is to align or tune something with something else, often in work or technical contexts. Phrases like etwas aufeinander abstimmen or sich mit jemandem abstimmen mean to coordinate or synchronize. Beispiel: Die Produktionspläne müssen mit dem Liefertermin abgestimmt werden. In this sense, abstimmen does not involve voting but rather achieving compatibility or agreement in timing and specifications.

Etymologically, abstimmen combines stimmen with the prefix ab-, reflecting a move toward finalization or separation in the sense of reaching a decision or aligning elements.
