AEXindex

The AEX index, short for Amsterdam Exchange Index, is the flagship stock market index of Euronext Amsterdam. It tracks the combined performance of the Dutch blue-chip equities listed on Euronext Amsterdam, serving as the benchmark for the Dutch equity market and a reference for investors and funds.

The index is calculated as a free float–adjusted, market capitalization-weighted measure. It comprises around 20 to 25 of the largest and most liquid Dutch shares and is reviewed quarterly to reflect changes in market capitalization and liquidity. Euronext calculates and publishes the index.

The lineup changes over time due to corporate actions, listings, and delistings. Typical sectors represented include financials, technology, consumer goods, healthcare, and industrials. The index is dominated by the largest Dutch companies, whose performance largely drives overall movements in the AEX.

The AEX serves as a key performance benchmark for Dutch equities and underpins many financial products, including index funds and derivative contracts such as futures and options. It has a long-standing history as a barometer of the Dutch economy and is used by investors to gain exposure to the Dutch market or to hedge Dutch equity risk.
