Eye movements, or øyebevegelser in Norwegian, refer to the voluntary and involuntary motions of the eyes. These movements are crucial for vision, allowing us to scan our environment, track moving objects, and focus on specific details. There are several types of eye movements, each serving a distinct purpose.

Saccades are rapid, ballistic movements that shift the gaze from one point of interest to another. For example, when reading, your eyes make a series of saccades to jump between words. Smooth pursuit movements, on the other hand, allow the eyes to track a moving object smoothly, keeping it in focus. Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) movements are involuntary and stabilize vision during head movements by compensating for the head's motion.

Other types include vergence movements, which are conjugate movements that bring the eyes inward or outward to focus on objects at different distances, and microsaccades, which are small, involuntary movements that help maintain visual acuity by preventing sensory adaptation. The complex coordination of these movements is controlled by a network of brain regions and cranial nerves. Understanding eye movements is important in fields ranging from neuroscience and psychology to ophthalmology and human-computer interaction.
