Õhkkülmutus, also known as air cooling, refers to a method of cooling that utilizes ambient air as the cooling medium. This is in contrast to water cooling or refrigerant-based cooling systems. In its simplest form, õhkkülmutus involves drawing in cooler outside air and circulating it over a heat-generating component or through a space that needs to be cooled.

One common application of õhkkülmutus is in the cooling of engines, particularly in older vehicles and some motorcycles. These engines have fins cast into their cylinders and cylinder heads. These fins significantly increase the surface area exposed to the air, allowing heat to dissipate more effectively. As the vehicle moves, or a fan is employed, air flows over these fins, carrying away the heat generated by combustion.

In a broader sense, õhkkülmutus also encompasses natural ventilation and the use of fans in buildings to improve thermal comfort. By promoting air movement, fans can enhance the rate of heat transfer from the skin, creating a cooling effect. Similarly, opening windows and doors allows cooler outside air to replace warmer indoor air, thus lowering the internal temperature. While not as precise as active refrigeration, õhkkülmutus is a fundamental and energy-efficient method for managing temperature in various contexts.
