årtillår

Årtillår is not an established term in standard Swedish. It does not appear in major dictionaries and is not widely recognized as a fixed concept. When it does appear, it is usually as a nonstandard compound built from the words år (year), till (to), and år again, and its meaning is entirely dependent on the surrounding context. Because of its nonstandard nature, årtillår can cause ambiguity for readers.

In practice, speakers and writers who intend to express a year-to-year relationship or comparison typically use phrases such as år till år, år över år, eller jämförelse mellan år. These formulations are clear and conventional in statistical, financial, and economic texts. The concatenated form årtillår, by contrast, risks being read as a typographical error or as a neologism lacking a defined scope.

Distinguishing from related terms is important. In Swedish, the leap year is called skottår, not a term related to year-to-year comparisons. If årtillår appears in translated or informal material, its authors should provide a definition to avoid misinterpretation.

Linguistic notes suggest that årtillår, like other potential coinages, can arise in informal writing or rapid drafting but should be avoided in formal or technical writing. Clear alternatives such as år över år or år till år are preferred for readability and precision.
